What is Xchanges? Xchanges is an interdisciplinary Technical Communication and Writing journal, based in the Humanities Department at New Mexico Tech, in Socorro, New Mexico. The journal's mission is to publish articles and hypertextual new work by undergraduate and graduate student scholars on various topics relevant to the disciplines of Technical Communication, Compositions Studies, and Rhetoric and Writing. In 2008, Xchanges moved from its former home at Wayne State University to New Mexico Tech. In its initial incarnation at Wayne State, the journal published work emerging out of the annual Y/X conference at Wayne State University, an interdisciplinary undergraduate/graduate American Studies conference. As a result of the move to New Mexico Tech, the Xchanges journal's mission has undergone a metamorphosis. The focus of the journal is no longer American Studies, broadly construed. To better reflect the mission of NMT and to illuminate the many ways technology and communication inform and transform our lives, Xchanges has been reinvented with a particular focus on technical communication/writing, composition and rhetoric, discourse studies, and new media communication. While the journal's transformation is a noticeable one, Xchanges retains its dedication to publishing the work of promising younger scholars at the undergraduate and graduate levels, from America and abroad. In keeping with New Mexico Tech's goal to educate and serve undergraduate- and graduate-student scholars in their research pursuits in technology and science, Xchanges will serve as an innovative forum for new scholarship on the intersections of community and technology made possible by audience-specific and purposeful communication.
